Grund the Orc King is a unique monster added in SLASH'EM.

Generation

Grund appears in his own level, Grund's Stronghold, found via a second down staircase on D:12 or 13. He will be generated on the throne in the large throne room at the left of the level.

Description

Grund is essentially a very strong Uruk-hai, having the same speed and AC but a much higher base level and far stronger weapon attack. Curiously, as he is internally considered nothing more than a plain orc (i.e. not an orc-captain, Uruk-hai or Mordor orc), he only has a chance to generate with an orcish helm and orcish dagger, in addition to the standard offensive and defensive items. However, he will frequently find a better weapon on the corpse of one of the other monsters in his throne room, once the player start killing them.

His corpse is guaranteed to convey poison resistance.

Strategy

Depending on when a player chooses to tackle Grund's Stronghold, Grund himself may represent a considerable threat. While he has no special abilities and no resistances beyond poison, his single weapon attack hits quite hard, especially if he picks up a high-damage weapon like a battle-axe or two-handed sword. Think of him as a far more accurate mumak with a much larger reserve of HP: a careful player should have little trouble taking him down, but an inattentive (and poorly armored) player may find themselves badly mauled by him. He does respect Elbereth, although the high likelihood of him or one of his minions generating with an attack wand somewhat reduces its effectiveness.
