A leather cloak is a type of cloak that appears in NetHack.

Generation
In addition to random generation, armor shops and general stores can stock dwarvish cloaks.
Mercenaries have a 1⁄2 chance of generating with a leather cloak.[1] Students, attendants, abbots, acolytes, guides, and apprentices have an effective 4⁄15 chance of generating with a leather cloak.[2] Chieftains, pages, roshis, and warriors have a 1⁄3 chance of generating with a leather cloak.[3]
Description
When worn, a leather cloak grants 1 base AC and MC1.
Strategy
Though strictly superior to the more common dwarvish and orcish cloaks, leather cloaks are generally used as temporary coverage for body armor until you can procure a better magical cloak, such as a cloak of protection, cloak of magic resistance or even an elven cloak.
History
The leather cloak is introduced in NetHack 3.4.0, where the buglist indicates that it is meant to resolve the incongruity of human soldiers being generated with elven cloaks.
Variants
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, various cloaks and other items retain their higher MC when worn - this makes the leather cloak much less desirable unless a character already has MC2 or better, e.g. from a cornuthaum or mithril-coat.
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, the Crown Royal Cloak is an artifact leather cloak that acts as the first sacrifice gift for Drunks.
