If you lack the resistance required to neutralize the passive attack, it is best to let your pet attack the mold, attack it with a ranged weapon, or leave it alone. Molds will never move or actively attack you. If you let your pet take it out make sure they are strong enough to do so.

In both NetHack and SLASH'EM, the mold sometimes leaves a corpse. In SLASH'EM, the corpse might revive itself ("The yellow mold rises from the dead!"). Of little importance, when level drained, the draining persist between revivals, like with trolls. Also in SLASH'EM, molds may grow on rotting corpses.

Mold may also generate on rotting corpses, and mold corpses themselves have a chance of reviving, similar to trolls. Older versions and patches had molds taking on the name of any named corpses they grew on.

In an old bug, molds growing on corpses would take the name of the corpse if it was named. In practice this can be encountered if one is trying to play older patches.

Slash'EM Extended adds playable mould and ungenomold races, and while the player is in mould or ungenomold form, they have many disadvantages associated with being a fungus. The main disadvantage is the lack of limbs. However, these races also have uncurable polymorphitis, and being in ungenomold form is impossible since they genocide themselves right at the start of the game, forcing them to be polymorphed into a monster for the entire game (although they can change their form, they may never revert back to ungenomold). On the other hand, a mould character fully experiences the lack of limbs that prevents picking up items, putting on armor, opening and kicking doors, etc.

A mold is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. All molds are part of the F fungus or mold monster class.

Common traits

Molds come in several colors, and each possesses a specific passive attack. All molds are sessile and vegan.

All molds except for the green mold have a small chance of conveying poison resistance when eating their corpse or tin.

Description

The brown mold has a passive attack that causes cold damage. Repeatedly attacking a brown mold can cause it to multiply due to your body heat.

Eating a brown mold corpse is harmless and has a 3% chance of granting poison resistance or cold resistance.

The green mold has a passive attack that causes acid damage. The corpse of a green mold is acidic to eat.

Green molds are marked in the source as conveying stoning resistance, but no code actually reads this flag when their corpse is eaten, so they end up conveying nothing.[1]

The red mold is infravisible and has a passive attack that causes fire damage.

Eating a red mold corpse is harmless and has a 3% chance of granting poison resistance or fire resistance.

The passive attack of the yellow mold does no damage, and instead stuns you for (level + 1)d4 turns. Its corpse is poisonous and hallucinogenic to eat.

Strategy

Most molds can be safely left alone unless they are blocking your path. As you are not likely to possess the required resistance for each of their passives early in the game, if attacking them it is best to use any ranged weapon you have - even rocks or junk daggers will suffice. While your pet can also handle the mold, bad luck with weaker pets can result in them taking more damage passively than they can successfully deal.

Since brown and red mold corpses are not harmful and provide a small amount of nutrition, it's usually a good idea to eat them for the small chance you will be granted an intrinsic.

Variants

SLASH'EM

Main article: Mold (SLASH'EM)

SLASH'EM features two new types of mold: the black mold and the disgusting mold. Their passive attack causes poison damage by way of spores - a nonbreathing character will be unaffected.

Mold may also generate on rotting corpses, and mold corpses themselves have a chance of reviving, similar to trolls. Older versions and patches had molds taking on the name of any named corpses they grew on.

SpliceHack

Main article: Moldier

SpliceHack allows fungi to generate on rotting corpses, similar to SLASH'EM. SpliceHack also adds moldiers: humanoid molds that can use weapons and other items.

Encyclopedia entry

Mold, multicellular organism of the division Fungi, typified
by plant bodies composed of a network of cottony filaments.
The colors of molds are due to spores borne on the filaments.
Most molds are saprophytes. Some species (e.g., penicillium)
are used in making cheese and antibiotics.
