Orcus, &, is one of the demon princes, guaranteed to appear in Orcus Town in Gehennom.

Orcus does physical damage and some spell damage, both of which you should be ready for. He also carries a wand of death, although for any character with magic resistance, the main problem this poses is how to relieve him of it without him wasting too many charges.

As a chaotic Demon Prince, Orcus can summon Yeenoghu and Demogorgon, and cannot be bribed.

Strategy

Orcus is dangerous and annoying beyond just his own attacks and his wand of death. Orcus can summon other demons, and he or those other demons can summon Demogorgon, the most difficult monster in the game. This is actually the most likely way that Demogorgon will appear in the game. Because of Orcus teleporting away and the long trek back to the upstairs, he has dozens of turns to wreak havoc and annoy the player. In addition he will deplete his wand of death against you. A key goal is to defeat Orcus with all of the charges in his wand intact, so as to use it against the Wizard or the Riders later.

If your attack merely causes damage, Orcus will normally teleport away to heal as soon as you get a substantial hit in. You need to prevent him from reacting to your attack. One way is to wield a cockatrice corpse or use a potion of paralysis. A mounted Knight can also easily joust Orcus with the lance repeatedly until dead; the stunning component of the joust prevents him from getting away.

When using a wielded potion of paralysis, you can wear a ring of free action so that you will not be paralyzed but Orcus will. This doesn't work 100% of the time so multiple potions are necessary. Potions of paralysis can be thrown if you do not posses a ring of free action, but again this is not guaranteed and you will need multiples.

Chasing him to the upstairs and fighting him while he stands on the upstairs is generally considered a bad idea. When he gets low on hp on the upstairs he will escape upstairs. You will have to follow and then have to walk all the way to the next upstairs of the next level.

Now that you've been teleported to a level far above Orcus proceed downwards through the dungeon to Orcustown again. Origin

Orcus in this form comes from Dungeons and Dragons. In turn inspired from a Roman god of the underworld.

He physically appears as a fat humanoid with a goat's head and legs, the horns of a ram, bat wings and a poisonous reptilian tail

Encyclopaedia entry

Orcus, Prince of the Undead, has a ram's head and a poison
stinger. He is most feared, though, for his powerful magic
abilities. His wand causes death to those he chooses.
