A quivering blob, b, is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. It is one of the few blob monsters without a harmful passive attack, and has a tendency to wander when moving.

A quivering blob has a single touch attack, and possesses poison resistance and sleep resistance.

Eating a quivering blob corpse or tin is vegan-compatible as with all blobs, and has a 13 chance of conveying poison resistance.

Generation

Randomly generated quivering blobs are always created hostile.

Strategy

Quivering blobs are extremely slow-moving at 1 speed, cause only minor damage with their infrequent touch attacks, and lack any form of passive attack - they are generally not threatening and easily dispatched, and their corpses serve as a low-risk source of poison resistance.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

Pets can obtain resistance properties from corpses, making quivering blobs a good source of poison resistance for herbivorous pets.

History

The quivering blob first appears in Hack 1.21 and Hack for PDP-11, both based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, and is included in the initial bestiary for Hack 1.0. In Hack 1.21, the quivering blob uses the Q glyph; in Hack for PDP-11, and from Hack 1.0 to NetHack 2.3e, it uses the q glyph. In NetHack 3.0.0, the quivering blob and other blob monsters are moved to their current glyph at b.

Variants

NetHack brass

In NetHack brass, the quivering blob's speed is increased to 8.

dNetHack

In dNetHack and notdNetHack, the quivering blob is given a passive attack like other blobs, which uses the same dice as their touch attack.
