A ring of teleport control is a type of ring that appears in NetHack.

Generation

In addition to random generation, the ring of teleport control can be sold in general shops and jewelers' shops.

Description

While worn, the ring of teleport control conveys the teleport control extrinsic.

Eating a ring of teleport control has a 13 chance of granting intrinsic teleport control.

Strategy

The ring of teleport control is an incredibly useful source of the property, especially when combined with teleportitis or a means of level teleportation. Compared to the teleport control intrinsic (e.g. from tengu), the ring may be preferable for some characters up to and throughout the mid-game since it can be removed at will to make use of vault teleport traps.

When combined with Gehennom mapping methods in the late game, the ring can speed up navigation through Gehennom during the search for the invocation items and the vibrating square, as well as heading back up through the branch on the ascension run - as a result, it is not out place to see characters wish up a ring of teleport control for their ascension kit.

Identification

A ring of teleport control can be tricky to identify by wear-testing after price identification, due to the possibility of a 300zm ring non-cursed ring of polymorph - careful testing for a ring of conflict can help narrow down candidates.

One method of identifying a ring of teleport control is to wear the suspected (and ideally noncursed) ring and then attempting teleportation, usually with a teleport trap, scroll or wand - if you are wearing teleport control, you will be able to choose a destination square. A sink can also be used to identify a ring of teleport control by dropping the suspected ring down it, which will produce a unique message.

History

The ring of teleport control first appears in Hack 1.0.

Messages

The sink looks like it is being beamed aboard somewhere.
You dropped a ring of teleport control down a sink; this will prompt you to type-name the ring.

Variants

NetHack Fourk

In NetHack Fourk, two of the new final level maps for the Fourk version of Sokoban have a sack which contains a ring of teleport control alongside a ring of polymorph control and a third random ring - if you already have either of the the first two rings, other jewellery may appear.

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, a ring of teleport control can be created at a furnace by combining a ring of teleportation and a ring of polymorph control. A ring of polymorph and a ring of teleport control can be combined to create a ring of polymorph control.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, the Rat King has a 23 chance of generating with a ring of teleport control. This is to make navigating his lair in the Sewers of Waterdeep variant of Mines' End much less difficult, as it has various sections that can only be reached by teleporting.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, the Rat King is relocated to the lair of his counterpart from SLASH'EM, which is in the main branch of the dungeon, but retains the 23 chance of generating with a ring of teleport control as in EvilHack.
