A saddle is a leather tool used to ride a monster.

Effects

Applying the saddle to a pet that is eligible as a steed allows you to ride it; doing so requires at least one free hand. It is possible to saddle a non-tame monster, but this is more difficult than saddling a pet, and you will not be permitted to ride the monster until it is tamed.

To remove a saddle from a monster, use the #loot command, a knock spell, or a wand of opening. Nymphs and foocubi may steal a monster's saddle; the saddle may be disintegrated if you are hit by a disintegration ray and you or your steed do not have reflection.

Cursed saddles cannot be removed, and will prevent you from dismounting as well. You cannot uncurse them with a blessed scroll of remove curse, holy water or cancellation. Besides the wand of opening or spell of knock, the other methods of freeing yourself from a cursed saddle are praying to have your god uncurse the saddle, riding the non-flying steed downstairs while burdened, or polymorphing yourself or your steed into something that can't ride, including eating a mimic.[1]

Attempting to saddle a foocubus will abuse wisdom.

Encyclopedia entry

The horseman serves the horse,
The neat-herd serves the neat,
The merchant serves the purse,
The eater serves his meat;
'Tis the day of the chattel,
Web to weave, and corn to grind,
Things are in the saddle,
And ride mankind.
