A sanctuary is a co-aligned[1] temple.[2] You will receive sanctuary from its priest[3] if the priest is peacefully[4] tending the altar and your alignment is greater than -4.[5] This means monsters will not enter the temple,[6] and any monsters currently within will not attack you in melee and flee as if you were standing on a respected Elbereth square[7] (though they can still use ranged attacks). Unlike Elbereth, only the following monsters ignore sanctuary:
