A scythe is a type of two-handed weapon that appears in dNetHack, SpliceHack and Hack'EM.
Generation
Scythes do not generate randomly.
In SpliceHack and Hack'EM, redcaps and Death always get a scythe. In these variants, The End is also the only artifact scythe.
In Hack'EM, peasants have 20% chance to generate with a scythe.
Strategy
In SpliceHack or Hack'EM, the scythe can be used in melee and applied like a polearm with equal effectiveness. Arguably the most useful non-artifact weapon in those variants.
History
The scythe first appears in dNetHack.
Variants
Hack'EM
In Hack'EM, the flaming lash always has the material of dragonhide.
Flaming lashes always do fire damage when attacking, similar to a wielded torch.
Balrogs have an 80% chance of generating with one.
