Statues are represented on screen by the ` character. The weight of the statue varies, depending on which monster it is a statue of. When a monster is turned to stone, usually by a cockatrice, its inventory becomes the statue contents. On lower levels the contents are usually spellbooks. To retreive the contents, you can either zap the statue with wand of striking, use a pick axe, or convert the statue into its monster type by casting Stone to flesh. Then kill the resulting monster and take the dropped items.
