Statues are represented on screen by the ` character. The weight of the statue varies, depending on which monster it is a statue of. Statues should not be confused with figurines.

When a monster is turned to stone, usually by a cockatrice, its inventory becomes the statue contents. On lower levels the contents are usually spellbooks. To retreive the contents, you can either zap the statue with wand of striking, use a pick axe, or convert the statue into its monster type by casting Stone to flesh. Then kill the resulting monster and take the dropped items.

Statue traps are indistinguishable from statues, but instead of being stone objects, they are magical, and will turn into the appropriate type of monster when you try to move into their square.
