ok...so I've never even beaten rogue which I've been playing since about 1980. I played rogue on
a vax!!! I was able to do because me pops was a big-time programmer for Intel, back when
all programmers were pretty hacky. I think the highest I ever got in rogue was maybe level 17. The Highest I've gotten in nethack, is maybe level 8. I can remember the jargon file being discussed and snickered @ because the humor was tailor made for that generation of programmers.
