A wand of secret door detection can help you detect things that are nearby, but hidden. The detect unseen spell has the same effect.

Identification
Identification of this wand is very easy. It is non-directional; you are not asked for a direction in which to zap it. This property is only shared with the wands of light, enlightenment, create monster, and wishing, all of which have very obvious effects when zapped.

When zapped, the wand detects all undiscovered secret doors, mimics, and traps in a radius of 8 squares in line-of-sight upon zapping/engraving.[1] It will also show the location of submerged creatures in pools. On the Plane of Air only, the wand also penetrates clouds.
Nearby monsters that you can't see will be revealed as I. Marks on spaces without monsters are removed. Monsters that are hiding will be revealed.
Engraving with the wand only identifies it if these things are present; otherwise it gives no message.
Strategy
The wand of secret door detection is most often used for finding the hidden entrance to the temple in Moloch's Sanctum. It can also be used to find the portals on the Elemental Planes.
