Dwarf zombie

A dwarf zombie, Z, is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. It is a zombified dwarf that can also appear in groups. Dwarf zombies can follow you to other levels if they are adjacent.

A dwarf zombie has a single claw attack.

Generation

Randomly generated dwarf zombies may occur in small groups of 2 to 4, and are always hostile.

Dwarf zombies may appear among the zombies and other monsters that are part of the first quest monster class for Priests, and make up 24175 of the monsters that are randomly generated on the Priest quest. The branch also has several undead-filled graveyards that include dwarf zombies among their ranks.

A dwarf zombie will leave an aged dwarf corpse upon death.[1][2]

Strategy

Despite their tendency to appear in groups, dwarf zombies are much weaker than regular dwarves and lack any form of defense outside of a slightly-better-than-base 9 AC, and should generally be easy for most characters to manage.

History

The dwarf zombie first appears in NetHack 3.3.0, unlike the other zombies that were first distinguished from each other in NetHack 3.0.0.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, dwarf zombies can be created by using the raise zombies technique while adjacent to the corpse of any dwarf.

Player gnomes and dwarves entering the Gnomish Mines will encounter dwarf zombies in place of normal dwarves.[3]

GruntHack

In GruntHack, dwarf zombies are replaced with the zombie racial monster, which dwarves are eligible to generate as.

Encyclopedia entry

The zombi ... is a soulless human corpse, still dead, but taken from the grave and endowed by sorcery with a mechanical semblance of life, -- it is a dead body which is made to walk and act and move as if it were alive.
