A wand of make invisible is a type of wand that appears in NetHack.

Generation

Wizards may be given a wand of make invisible as the random wand in their starting inventory.[1]

Wands of make invisible make up 9200 (4.5%) of all randomly-generated wands. General stores and quality apparel and accessories shops can sell wands of make invisible.

Randomly generated monsters may receive a wand of make invisible as a miscellaneous item: if an invisibility item is chosen for that monster's starting inventory, it has a 16 chance of receiving the wand, unless it is not hostile and you cannot currently see invisible.[2]

Description

A hero zapping the wand will render any monster it is pointed at permanently invisible (including the hero, if zapped at themselves) unless they are wearing a mummy wrapping, and will auto-identify the wand[3][4][5]—zapping a mimic will uncloak them at the same time they become invisible, and zapping any peaceful monster will anger them. Zapping the wand downward or engraving with it will remove any engraved text on that square;[6] engraving with the wand prints a somewhat distinct message, but does not auto-identify it. Monsters will use this wand and zap it at themselves to become invisible unless they are wearing a mummy wrapping or possess a gaze attack, auto-identifying the wand and marking their position at the time of zapping with an I; peaceful and tame monsters will not do so if the cannot see invisible.

Applying the wand to break it releases a damaging magical blast that has a 110 chance of giving the hero permanent invisibility, and otherwise makes them invisible for up to 250 more turns.[7]

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.

Per commit f83a57c5, a hero zapping the wand at themselves gains 31–45 more turns of temporary invisibility.

Strategy

Main article: Invisibility

If you do not yet have a method to enter shops, e.g. a mummy wrapping, you might want to keep this wand on hand in case you get a fresh stalker corpse or identify a tin of stalker meat - eating one while already invisible will grant the see invisible intrinsic and make you permanently invisible (which you already will be if you use the wand). Otherwise, this wand typically has little use if you are already permanently invisible: making your non-steed pets invisible does not give them a combat advantage, and many of the strong spellcasting pets will make themselves invisible anyway if you have see invisible. You may also find a blessed potion of invisibility as your source of the property before a wand of make invisible.

Floating eyes are ideal to zap with the wand if you do not yet have a means of preventing or avoiding its paralyzing passive gaze, which relies on your ability to see it - pacifists in particular may want the wand to make floating eyes invisible and safe for their pet to kill. The wand can also prove useful if you need to get rid of a degraded burnt Elbereth, which is usually hard to remove otherwise, and can otherwise be saved as fodder for polypiling.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.

The wand's temporary invisibility makes it more ideal to use for gaining permanent invisibility and see invisible from eating stalker meat, and the wand in general is more useful for taking advantage of invisibility specifically during combat situations.

Identification

The wand of make invisible is one of three wands that causes engravings to disappear when used to engrave, with the other two being cancellation and teleportation. Testing for the wand can be done by zapping a wand that makes an engraving vanish at a disposable item, such as an identified potion or a weapon or piece of armor that is formally identified as cursed: the wand of make invisible has no effect on items, while cancellation will turn many potions into water or fruit juice and set armor and weapons to uncursed and +0, and teleportation will relocate the item(s) to another square.

History

The wand of make invisible first appears in Hack 1.0.

Messages

<foo> turns transparent!
You zapped a monster with a wand of make invisible.[8]
You feel rather itchy under your <mummy wrapping>.
You zapped yourself with the wand, but it was absorbed by a worn mummy wrapping.[9]

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, the wand of make invisible can make objects invisible, simplifying the process of identifying the wand.

Two wands of make invisible are randomly placed in the open area of Grund's Stronghold at level creation. The statue trap of an arch-lich found in the Lawful Quest contains a wand of make invisible with a single charge. A wand of make invisible is always generated in The Spider Caves at level creation.

All of the above information applies to SlashTHEM.

GruntHack

In GruntHack, wands of make invisible can make objects invisible as in SLASH'EM, and will often be invisible themselves.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, a wand of make invisible can be used to repair the active camouflage system of imperial elven body armor, allowing it to grant invisibility while worn.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, wands of make invisible grant the hero temporary invisibility rather than permanent invisibility if they zap it at themselves. A cursed wand will instead remove invisibility from an invisible target it is zapped at, and additionally a 12 chance of aggravating all monsters currently on the level, similar to a cursed potion of invisibility.

All of the above also applies to Hack'EM.
