A cream pie is a type of veggy comestible that appears in NetHack.

Generation

In addition to random generation, cream pies can be found in delicatessen shops.

Keystone Kops each have a 14 chance of generating with 3 to 4 cream pies.[1]

Description

Eating a cream pie confers 100 nutrition. Cream pies are vegetarian.

Throwing a cream pie at a monster will blind them, and monsters can throw cream pies at you for the same effect, which blinds you for up to 25 (more) turns.[2] Wielding a cream pie and attacking with it will splatter the pie in the target monster's face. Thrown and/or wielded cream pies do no damage. Applying a cream pie will smash it onto your face, blinding yourself for up to 25 (more) turns.

If you are hit by a cream pie, you can #wipe your face or apply a towel to regain sight faster. Applying a cursed towel may cause cream pie gunk to cover your face.

Cream pies splatter when thrown regardless of if they hit anything, and force bolts from the spell zapped wand of striking will also destroy any cream pies in the beam's path.

Strategy

The cream pie is usually not carried as a long-term food source due to its low nutrition to weight ratio, and is instead employed as a one-off source of blindness (e.g., to use intrinsic telepathy) if you have not obtained a blindfold or towel.

Cream pies can offer a momentary defense against gaze attacks from monsters such as floating eyes and pyrolisks, either by temporarily blinding yourself or the monster - remember that the cream will eventually clear off. Blindfolds and towels are preferable for situations that require reliable long-term blindness if you have either of them, unless you are wearing a pair of lenses (including The Eyes of the Overworld) and do not want to use up turns removing them.

Cream pies are most useful for pacifist players, who will often wield one or more pies to avoid doing any damage at all if they accidentally hit a hostile monster.

The Keystone Kops are a readily-accessible source of cream pies for characters that are willing to risk stealing from shops and capable of avoiding the shopkeeper, provided they (or a pet) can reliably kill the Kops before they can throw their pies.

History

The cream pie first appears in NetHack 1.3d.

In NetHack 3.4.3 and earlier versions, applying or otherwise destroying a wielded cream pie can crash the game - this is bug C343-218, and is fixed in October 2006 via commits 15d933a, 271632d and 60c9667. In versions and derived variants that do not have this bug patched, you are safe if you immediately wield something else (or even nothing -), or else save and restore the game. The Bilious Patch Database also has a patch that addresses this, Bilious #342, added in January 2009.
