The elven shield is a kind of shield. It is made of wood, so it resists rusting. Like all elven items, it can be safely enchanted up to +7 instead of +5.
Generation
Elves have a 5/12 chance of being generated with an elven shield.[1]
Strategy
For pure AC purposes it's the best shield in the game. It is significantly lighter than the dwarvish roundshield and large shield and cannot rust, so it makes a good replacement for either of those items.
