Welcome!

Welcome!

Hi, Ardub23! Welcome, and thanks for joining NetHackWiki!

  • The How to help and Style guide pages are excellent starting points.
  • Special:Recentchanges is a great first stop, because you can see what other people are editing right this minute, and where you can help.
  • Questions? Need help? You can ask at the Community Portal, the forum, or on the discussion page associated with each article! Just remember to sign those posts with four tildes: ~~~~. That will expand to create a signature.

You can put {{NAOplayer|NAO player account}} on your user page to link to your NAO player account. Capitalization matters.

We are really happy to have you here, and look forward to working with you!

This is an automated greeting.

Tangential asides

While they're by definition not directly related to NetHack, tangential asides can be fun. ;) Kufat (talk) 02:06, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

I assume you're referring to this edit? I removed that because grappling hooks have nothing at all to do with rope golems. I figured it was generally agreed upon in most wikis that everything in a given article, fun or not, should relate to the article's subject in some way. — Ardub23 (talk) 02:22, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree it was a bit extraneous. Kufat (talk) 22:08, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

Unused attribute tags

Re "Day 46 of remooving these goshforsaken unused attribute tags. Food supply running low. I've begun to lose hope of feel the sunlight again," I didn't notice you were doing that. I have wiki-blocks without the tags you don't have to edit by hand. Here's the current one: https://gist.github.com/Chris-plus-alphanumericgibberish/7d01b1297d6947559e24f41ae89c3cff (note, seems there is a bug after zruty? I'll have to see what's up with that)

--Chris (talk) 01:50, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Fixed, gist updated with complete version. Note that the horrors change stat blocks every game.

--Chris (talk) 01:54, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know about this! — Ardub23 (talk) 19:33, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

You're doing God's work --Luxidream (talk) 02:45, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Why would someone expect to be able to axe a corpse?

You ask this question in this edit.

Probably because they have been playing old versions of Crawl, where butchering corpses in order to eat them required an edged weapon to be wielded; this suggests it as a way to deal with troll corpses. Pinkbeast (talk) 00:01, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

Mirror Brand

You don't mind if I set up an artifact article for that like I have been with various other variant artifacts, I hope? --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 07:48, 27 June 2023 (UTC)

By all means, go ahead! — Ardub23 (talk) 14:35, 27 June 2023 (UTC)

Luck

"Why do we have this convention again? It's unhelpful AND incorrect" Presumably to differentiate between the in-game luck stat and "generic" luck. (I say "presumably" because that's how I've always understood it.) --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 08:04, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

I'm guessing it comes from IRC; while it's usually possible to infer from context in a wiki article which type of luck is meant, that's a lot less true in a one-sentence IRC reply (e.g. if someone asks "Why is this door resisting twenty times in a row?" and gets the response "bad luck"). It certainly predates this wiki, though it's by no means universal in the old text spoilers. While I do agree that in-game messages should be reflected accurately on-wiki, I personally don't find it unhelpful or incorrect as a convention otherwise. -Ion frigate (talk) 11:27, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
I've never seen a single sentence on the wiki that needed capitalization to distinguish the luck stat from general good fortune. Nobody has ever read "If your luck is below zero..." and wondered if that means anything other than a game statistic. Meanwhile, the "convention" of capitalizing it has led to errors in quoting game messages (as you've seen), and to ridiculous constructions like "unLucky" in place of more sensible terms like "low luck". The wiki follows the game's capitalization for everything else without issue, and this one arbitrary exception is creating problems and solving none. — Ardub23 (talk) 03:43, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Circling back to this - making a formal discussion of it on the Style Guide talk page and wanted you and Ion to chime in. --Umbire the Phantom (talk) 02:46, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
