Allows you to learn the detect treasure spell. This spell has the same effect as a potion of object detection. It is the special spell for rogues.

Casting effects

Case Effect
Unskilled or Basic You detect objects on that level and exercise your wisdom.
Skilled or Expert

You detect objects on that level and exercise your wisdom.
You know the appearance of all objects on that level (and in your and monster inventories) as if you had seen them.

Treasures detected are always real. If Nethack doesn't show the gold/gem symbol when you get to the marked spot, it means that the items are buried in the floor. Just dig a pit (apply a pickaxe down >) and you'll find the stuff.

N.B. Your wisdom is exercised if the only objects on the level are in your inventory, but not if there are no objects at all.

Strategy

Although hardly useless, the detect treasure spell offers a function for which a number of alternatives exist: e.g. a potion of object detection. Uses include the remote detection of vaults - they show up as four gold coins (provided they haven't been looted by you, or eaten by a rock mole):

This spell is also sometimes used in the Castle, as an easy way to detect where the chest containing the wand of wishing is.

Gehennom exploration gets more rewarding with it, because you can retrieve the better [[object]s without walking everywhere.
