Sustain ability is a property in NetHack that prevents most changes to a character's attribute.
The only source of protection from shape changers is wearing a ring of sustain ability.

Description
Sustain ability prevents attribute changes from exercise or abuse, as well as blocking the parts of item effects that change attributes:
- Applying a cursed unicorn horn
- Eating the corpse or tin of a giant
- Eating a tin of spinach
- Quaffing a non-cursed potion of gain ability
- Sitting on a coaligned altar
Sustain ability does not prevent changes to attributes from polymorph, including the shuffling that occurs when polymorphing into your own race.

In dNetHack, the Binder spirit Dahlver-Nar confers sustain ability while bound.

In addition to dNetHack details, notdNetHack adds The Talisman of Buer, an artifact amulet of life saving that confers sustain ability while worn.
