Quaffing effects

Case Effect
blessed You levitate for 250 to 299 (more) turns.

You may land at will with the > key if not wearing a ring or boots of levitation, but note that this terminates the effect of the potion--you can't take off again.

uncursed You levitate for 10 to 149 (more) turns.
cursed You levitate for 10 to 149 (more) turns.

You lose any ability to land at will.
If already levitating or on the Plane of Water, no further effect. Otherwise, the < command is attempted if you are on an upstair. If not, you suffer 1 to 10 points of damage (1 if wearing any hat).

Dipping items into this potions (except alchemy) has no effect in vanilla NetHack; in particular, it does not make things lighter.

This potion self-identifies only if it causes you to start levitating.

Strategy

See levitation for details on levitating.

This potion is used in alchemy to create potions of gain level, but is otherwise a prime candidate for dilution or cancellation. You can save one blessed potion to cross the Elemental Planes starting from the Plane of Air (so that specifically your ring slots are free for more important rings); the effect of a blessed potion will last long enough to reach the Astral Plane (given that you can detect the portals and you don't delay your travel too long). Its effect is usually considered harmful: although levitation can be useful if you have no other means to levitate (or means to water walk), it can also be deadly when you don't have precise control over when the levitation stops, so you should generally bless that potion. The ring of levitation is an entirely superior option, but carries the subtle danger that it can be destroyed by a successful electric attack, which may become fatal if you are levitating over water. Similarly to the ring of levitation are the levitation boots; they also occupy an important slot but you have full control over your levitation. The subtle danger of the boots is that they may be removed or stolen by some monsters, so this may be deadly if it happens while levitating above water. The potion doesn't have those problems, but any potion can be used just once.
