For the monster, see xorn.

The xorn is a monster class that appears in NetHack, and is represented by an uppercase X glyph (X). Xorns are designated internally by the macro S_XORN.[1]

The xorn is the only member of the monster class.[2]

Traits

Xorns are considered kebabable: weapons that use the spear skill gain +2 to-hit against them.[3]

Generation

Xorns are the second quest monster class for Monks and the second quest monster, meaning that they make up 635 of the monsters that are randomly generated on the Monk quest.

History

The xorn first appears in Hack for PDP-11, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, and is included in the initial bestiary for Hack 1.0.

Variants

Some variants further populate the xorn monster class with monsters that may have similar traits to the xorn, including phasing and/or the ability to eat metal.

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, xorns are also the second quest monster class for Flame Mages and the second quest monster, meaning that they make up 635 of the monsters that are randomly generated on the Flame Mage quest.

dNetHack

dNetHack adds some new monsters to the monster class:

NetHack Fourk

In NetHack Fourk, this monster class is replaced by the large deep-rock dweller, which uses the same glyph and includes the xorn as part of the monster class - large deep-rock dwellers are still designated internally by the same macro.

SlashTHEM

SlashTHEM adds some new monsters to the monster class, including monsters from the biodiversity patch:
