Gnome leader

A gnome leader, G, is a type of monster that appears in NetHack. The gnome leader is a slightly stronger type of gnome that is a lord to gnomekind: male gnome leaders are known as gnome lords, while female gnome leaders are known as gnome ladies. Like standard gnomes, gnome leaders have infravision and can be seen with infravision, and hostile ones will collect items that they can use.

A gnome leader has a single weapon attack.

Generation

Randomly-generated gnome leaders are always peaceful towards gnomish and dwarven heroes, and will be hostile towards heroes of other playable races. A gnome can grow up into a gnome leader of the matching gender, and a gnome leader can grow up into a gnome ruler of the matching gender.[1]

Some gnome leaders are generated within the Gnomish Mines during level creation:

  • A gnome lord is generated on each of the filler levels in the Gnomish Mines during level creation.[2]
  • Gnome leaders are generated in some maps of Minetown.
    • One room has a 34 chance of containing a gnome lord behind a locked door.[3]
    • Two gnome lords are placed randomly across the Grotto Town and Bustling Town maps, with a third placed on a specific square.[4][5][6][7]
    • One gnome lord is placed in a random location on the Bazaar Town map.[8]
  • Three gnome lords each are generated in The Gnome King's Wine Cellar and The Mimic of the Mines maps of Mines' End.[9][10]
  • For a dwarven or gnomish hero, two-thirds of the gnomes and other peaceful monsters will instead be replaced with random monsters.

Gnome leaders may appear among the hostile G that generate in throne rooms, as well the monsters randomly generated by looting a throne while confused and carrying gold (provided there is no chest on the level).[11]

Starting inventory

Gnome leaders are eligible for offensive items, defensive items, and miscellaneous items.

Gnome leaders that are not created on the Rogue level have a 512 chance of being generated with one of the default weapon sets, with an equal probability of each:[12] 3-14 darts, a crossbow and 3-14 crossbow bolts, a bow and 3-14 arrows, a stack of 3-5 daggers, or an aklys. Additionally, a gnome leader placed during level creation has a chance of being generated with a single candle:[13] the chance is 120 if they are in the Gnomish Mines, and 160 otherwise.[14] The candle has a 34 chance of being tallow and a 14 chance of being wax, and will be lit if the gnome leader is generated in a dark area.[15][16]

Strategy

Gnome leaders are faster and deal slightly more damage than regular gnomes, but are otherwise similar: they are still strong enough that an early hero may not be able to reliably kill them in a few hits, and prolonged fights in open areas like the Gnomish Mines can become perilous as a result. The ranged weapons that gnomes often generate with also makes fighting in the open ill-advised if they can shoot at you or pelt you with projectiles, and they can also use wands, scrolls and other items against you.

Escape items or ranged attacks of your own can help defend against oncoming gnome leaders—the terrain of the Gnomish Mines often allows for strategic baiting of monsters into melee range, and leading gnomish monsters into corridors or around corners can help you isolate them from their allies. Gnome leaders respect Elbereth, but will still use any ranged attacks at their disposal when fleeing. Magic resistance and reflection are not remotely required, but heroes that happen upon a source early are protected from worst-case scenarios involving gnomes and certain surprise wands or tools.

History

The gnome leader first appears in NetHack 3.0.0 as the gnome lord: from this version to NetHack 3.6.7, including variants based on those versions, gnome lords are exclusively-male monsters, and gnomes of both genders grow up into male gnome lords. NetHack 5.0.0 makes changes to monster growth via commit 0c3b9642 so that gnomes, gnome lords and several other gendered monsters do not change gender while growing up and their resulting form has a matching title.

Variants

NetHack variants created prior to NetHack 5.0.0 may make adjustments so that gnome leaders have proper female counterparts for gnome women to grow up into.

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, gnomes of both genders grow up into gnome lords as they do in NetHack 3.4.3 and previous contemporary versions.

If the hero is a gnome or a dwarf, then most peaceful gnome lords in the Gnomish Mines are replaced with hostile gnome zombies during level creation with the exception of bones levels[17]—this ensures that such heroes will have to deal with hostile monsters like heroes of other races.[18]

GruntHack

In GruntHack, gnome lords are effectively replaced by lord and lady racial monsters, which can be gnomish.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, female gnomes grow up into gnome ladies and gnome ladies grow up into gnome queens—both are treated as distinct monsters from gnome lords and gnome kings, rather than simple female counterparts. Gnome lords themselves are nearly identical to how they appear and behave in NetHack 3.4.3, though they are additionally made invalid as polymorph forms. Gnome lords possess second-level low-light vision and have basic prowess in martial combat.

Gnome lords may appear in the court of a throne room ruled by a gnome king, gnome queen, dwarf king, or dwarf queen: each monster in the court of a gnome king or queen has a 120 chance of being a gnome lord, while each monster in the court of a dwarf king or queen has a 3100 chance of being a gnome lord. Gnome lords may also appear as prisoners in randomly-generated throne rooms, as well as throne rooms ruled by kobold lords, orc-captains, Uruk-captains, and the Necromancer (where they have twice the odds of appearing).

Gnome lords can appear among the zombified monsters generated in the future, i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest.

Peaceful gnome lords allied with the damaged arcadian avenger are placed on the Gnomish Ranger quest home level during level creation.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, the monster is referred to as a gnome noble, with gnome lords and gnome ladies as gendered titles, and gnomes of both genders grow up into the respective nobles.

Hack'EM

In Hack'EM, the monster is also known as a gnome noble and behaves as in EvilHack.
