A potion of see invisible is a type of potion that appears in NetHack.

Generation
Wizards may be given a potion of see invisible as any of the three random potions in their starting inventory.[1]
Potions of see invisible make up 21⁄500 (4.2%) of all randomly-generated potions. General stores and liquor emporiums can stock potions of see invisible.
Mixing a potion of fruit juice with a potion of either gain level or gain energy can produce a diluted potion of see invisible.
Description
Quaffing a potion of see invisible grants the see invisible intrinsic, which lets the hero see invisible monsters, with the potion's effects dependent on beatitude:[2] a cursed or uncursed potions gives the intrinsic for 750-849 turns, while a blessed one has a chance to give the intrinsic indefinitely (otherwise having the same effect as an uncursed one). The chance of getting the permanent intrinsic depends on whether you already have intrinsic invisibility and see invisible (including temporary intrinsics, but not counting extrinsics from worn items). If you have neither of them, the chance of getting it is 1⁄10 (10%); if you only have invisibility, the chance is 1⁄6 (16.7%); if you only have see invisible, the chance is 1⁄4 (25%); and if you have both, you are guaranteed to get it permanently.[3] Non-cursed potions also cure blindness.[4] A hero quaffing the potion while they are invisible and not blind will auto-identify the potion.
Canceling a potion of see invisible will turn it into a potion of fruit juice.
Strategy
After you have obtained the intrinsic permanently (typically from quaffing a potion of invisibility or zapping a wand of make invisible at yourself, quaffing a noncursed potion of see invisible and after that quaffing a blessed potion of see invisible), these potions are a prime candidate for dilution. Foodless players that obtain the intrinsic permanently may want to cancel these potions to gain nutrition from the resulting fruit juice. A backup blessed potion of see invisible may be worth carrying if you fear losing the property to intrinsic theft from a gremlin or throne effect.
Identification
The potion of sickness is one of four 50zm potions, along with the potions of fruit juice, see invisible and booze - incidentally, all of the other potions can be made from fruit juice.
The potions of see invisible and fruit juice share exactly the same messages—this is derived from Rogue, where the former potion tastes like fruit juice.[5] This makes them quite difficult to tell apart by random quaffing, and it is recommended to type-name both potions so that you can rename them later if one is identified. Some ways to identify a potion of see invisible include quaffing them while blind, with see invisible curing the blindness, and looking for previously invisible monsters that suddenly become visible; monsters with a means to become invisible will use it while the hero can see invisible. Enlightenment after quaffing a suspected potion will reveal if you have the intrinsic.
History
The potion of see invisible first appears in NetHack 3.0.0.
Prior to NetHack 5.0.0, a blessed potion of see invisible was guaranteed to give the see invisible intrinsic regardless of whether you already had see invisible or invisibility, with no random roll required.
Messages
- For the messages shared with the potion of fruit juice, see Potion of fruit juice#Messages.
- You can see through yourself, but you are visible!
- You quaffed the potion while invisible.
Variants
NetHack: The Next Generation
In NetHack: The Next Generation, the potion of see invisible takes 3 charges to brew with a chemistry set. This also applies to SlashTHEM.
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, Flame Mages, Ice Mages, Necromancers, and Wizards may be given a potion of see invisible as any of the random potions in their starting inventories.[6][7][8][9]
Dipping an invisible item into a potion of see invisible will remove its invisibility.
All of the above information also applies to SlashTHEM.
xNetHack
In xNetHack, quaffing a potion of see invisible grants the property for 201-400 more turns, with an additional 200 for an uncursed potion and 400 for a blessed one. This gives the potions much more use in the long-term.
