The caret ^ has a few purposes:
- A ^ on the screen represents a trap, including the quest portal if on the rogue level.
- Press ^ for the trap_id command.
- ^ is the default for the menu_first_page option. Supported by tty and curses interfaces, see menu controls.
The caret is also used as a prefix to denote a control character, for example, use ^P (control-p) to review previous messages. This is a standard UNIX usage that's also used by MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows text-mode interfaces.
