Historical uses
In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, the giant rat uses the r glyph, and the robber uses the R glyph - in Hack for PDP-11, the R glyph is given to the rust monster. In NetHack 3.4.3 and previous versions, including some variants based on those versions, shift + R can only be used to take off an accessory, e.g. a ring or an amulet.
