When the player character dies and leaves a corpse, a grave is created with the tombstone bearing the character's name and manner of death. Graves can only occur on an open, non-trapped floor square.

Digging into a grave can result in useful items. However, if you are lawful, you will receive a -1 alignment penalty. Also, if you are a lawful archaeologist, you will instead receive a -3 alignment penalty. While digging, you may also find a corpse, unearth a mummy ("You've disturbed a tomb!"), or aggravate a zombie or lizard ("The grave's owner is very upset!").

Graves can also be generated at random. Some messages include:

You cannot engrave with your fingers on a grave. Engraving with anything else will generate an angry ghoul, if one hasn't been generated for that grave already ("You disturb the undead!").

A graveyard always contains a number of tombstones in it.
