I have played various previous versions of NetHack and knew to to get protection one should donate XL * 400 (I would donate XL * 400 + 1 not to appear too cheap!). I do not understand the new NetHack 5 system and the correct strategy. Submarine (talk) 21:47, 11 June 2026 (UTC)

The optimal strategy is extremely complicated, but there's a simple strategy that gets pretty good results: carry all the gold you're willing to donate in open inventory, then donate the higher of the two suggested donation amounts (again, you can add 1 if you want to not appear too cheap). If you have a large amount of money, this is the equivalent of making multiple protection donations (so you may receive a lot of protection at once). You're likely to have some gold left over – if there's enough, you can donate again. Note that you will need at least XL * 500 gold in open inventory to guarantee that the option of a protection donation is available (otherwise the suggested price may be too high).
