If a character wearing the amulet of life saving dies, the amulet literally saves their life and restores full hit points with the "You survived that attempt on your life" message. In the process the amulet disintegrates.
Monsters can wear amulets of life saving as well; they will simply come back to life after they die, and the amulet is from that point identified.
