Egg

An egg is a comestible often laid by a monster. If it is laid by a monster it will hatch into either a baby or full-grown monster. If you lay an egg and have the eggs in your inventory, they will become your pets.

Eggs can also be eaten; they provide modest nutrition. Eggs, being animal-based, will be eaten by carnivorous monsters. Because they are animal based they are not suitable for vegan conduct.

Eggs can be thrown with a message of "Splat!"; because of this, they cannot be used to tame dogs or cats.

On the later levels, cockatrice eggs may appear. These are indistinguishable from normal eggs but will turn you to stone if you eat them. If you eat an egg and notice the cockatrice messages occuring, do something immediately to prevent your impending death. Cockatrice eggs are also popular as projectiles that will petrify any stoning-susceptible monsters they hit.
