Because it's "too powerful"? So my internet was down, and I felt like Nethack, so I dug up an old 3.4.3 distro I had lying around and played a game or two (I get killed early if I don't have the NAO colored health-bar, unfortunately.) Something weird happened in one game: I a female Ranger on Dlvl. 2, and I went into a shop. I couldn't afford anything, so I walked out, and lo and behold, right outside the shop was the uncursed Mjollnir. I don't know if it had been lying somewhere and my pet had picked it up and dropped it, or if it just randomly appeared, but anyways, it was there. I actually got pretty far wielding it, but it felt wrong being a ranger and using it.
Now, at first I thought it was a bones level. My pet could have plausibly found the items pile and picked it up, but that doesn't track, for a number of reasons. First, where did the ghost go? Normally the ghost is on top of the pile, right? And second, considering that pets don't normally step on cursed items, what are the chances of a bones pile being all b/u items? And finally, I didn't find the ghost or the pile anywhere, and if I couldn't find it, how could my pet?
So is this just a glitch, or is there some game-play mechanic I don't know about?
