I'm a level 10 dwarven valkyrie right now and I just applied a stethoscope to check my alignment, which said I was piously aligned. - There's a lot of reasons why praying may fail; being insufficiently aligned is only one of them. See the article on prayer for more information. In general, if you sacrifice something to your god and get no special message, or the four-leaf clover effect, it's almost definitely safe to pray. It's also safe to pray if enlightenment says so (barring an edge case involving being neutral and polymorphing yourself into an undead creature). Most likely you prayed too soon after a previous prayer.
