So I'm sitting at my stash contemplating my ascension run. (Actually more like a descension-ascension run - I've gotten down to the Valley of the Dead and I think I have everything I'll need to descend through Gehennom, map it as I go, get the amulet, and come back up all in one go. Someone tell me if this is bad idea for some reason.)

Anyway, I was thinking of my first ascension when I took the time to dig a straight line between every set of staircases on every level of the dungeon. And I wondered, what would be the most absurd, neurotic, over-prepared way to prepare for your ascension run? Not as a discussion of actual strategy, but just as a thought exercise/mockery of my first massively over-prepared ascension.

Ideas so far:

-Dig a straight line between every set of staircases on every level. Easily doable with a pickaxe and patience

-Engrave an Elbereth on every tile of the path you just made. I was tempted to say "permanent Elbereth" but that would probably be impossible to accomplish in a single lifetime. Semi-permanent, however, would also be doable with an athame and patience

-Make one long boulder fort walling off each side of the straight-line-Elbereth-path? Um? Lots of scrolls of earth? Lots of reverse genociding giants to throw boulders at you? I'm not sure if this could be done.

-Alternatively, dig a hole on each side of the SLEP (the straight-line-Elbereth-path, remember?). Also entirely doable with pickaxe, patience, and a masochistic streak.

I've gotten down to the Valley of the Dead you've a long way to go, then, especially if you've not got further before.
Dig a straight line... what, you mean other people don't? maybe this is why i keep failing.
Engrave an Elbereth... if you're prepared to be this ocd about it, pudding farming, polymorph and a pyec will give you enough charges to make them all permanent.
i guess the real question is, are there enough sessile monsters to enhance the fifty or so boulder forts?
oh, yes, and the wizard can fly so pits are no use. --194.116.198.179 11:48, 29 September 2011 (UTC)
