A hole is a trap, but it is always visible. Holes, like most other traps, show as ^ on the screen. Sometimes a monster will intentionally jump into a hole to escape.

You can zap a wand of digging downward to make a hole, dropping you down a few dungeon levels. If a monster has a wand of digging, it might zap it downward as well. This can be annoying; whenever you find that dwarf, it makes another hole, and when you finally kill it, the wand is empty.

You can also dig downward with a pick-axe to make a hole, but that is very slow, and not useful for escaping monsters. First you would make a pit, and if you dig more it becomes a hole.

Zap your wand or apply your pick-axe, and press [>] to fire it downward.

Some dungeon levels are made of hard material which is undiggable.
