Luck

Luck is the property of a player character that affects many events involving chance. There are many ways to change your luck, to become either more or less lucky. See http://www.steelypips.org/nethack/343/gems-343.html#luck

Luck has a part in:

• finding hidden doors and traps
• receiving a favorable response from prayer (and range of possible favors: http://www.steelypips.org/nethack/pray.html#p4)
• getting certain outcomes from sitting on thrones
• getting certain outcomes from quaffing from sinks and fountains
• success of blessed identify scrolls

Luckstones are items whose sole purpose is to modify the behavior of the player character's luck.

Decreasing luck is actually helpful to characters who may not wish to be crowned or receive spellbooks.
