Secure Shell, known informally as SSH or ssh, is a program allows a machine to login and execute commands on a remote machine securely. Communication is encrypted, allowing the machines to communicate over insecure networks without being snooped upon or hijacked. The most common implementation is OpenSSH, which is available on many operating systems such as Windows, MacOS, Linux, and BSD, and is currently maintained by the OpenBSD project.

Many public servers are accessible via SSH, as it is more secure and usually better-supported than the older, unencrypted telnet.
