Iron shoes are a kind of non-magical boot. When unidentified, they appear as hard shoes.
They are commonly dropped by dwarves in the Gnomish Mines, and, along with high boots, are one of the only two kinds of boots to have a natural AC of 2. They are much easier to find than high boots, but weigh more and incur a spellcasting penalty.
