The title of this wiki page is not "/dev/null/nethack tournament", because if the first character in the title was a slash, then that would trigger the subpages feature of MediaWiki.

The /dev/null/nethack tournament (also known as the devnull tournament or devnull tourney) occurs every year in November. During each tournament, players connect to game servers (typically using ssh) and play individual games of NetHack. The main constraint is to finish all games before the start of December, to qualify for a trophy. The http://nethack.devnull.net site contains much information about this event, including the results of past tournaments and the descriptions of each trophy.

Starting with the 2005 tournament, /dev/null began adding optional challenges to the game. The Kingdom of Loathing Challenge appeared in 2005. The Grue Challenge joined the KoL Challenge for 2006. The tournament web site distributed a patch that adds the two challenges to the game, so that you may practice at home (or spoil the challenges). The web site linked to a copy of the patch during the 2006 tourney but has apparently removed the link; if you find the patch, please do link to it from this wiki page.
