The much-maligned mysterious force is a random level teleportation effect that occurs one quarter[1] when trying to climb stairs in Gehennom with the Amulet of Yendor. Lawful characters are dumped randomly one to three levels below their current location; for neutral players this occurs half the time, with the other half teleporting them somewhere on the current level; and for chaotic players they are simply teleported around the current level.
There is another mysterious force which is cited as the reason that one cannot teleport on a no-teleport level.
