Six basic attributes

These are the six basic attributes, as in Dungeons and Dragons:

  1. strength
  2. dexterity
  3. constitution
  4. intelligence
  5. wisdom
  6. charisma

Training attributes

As you play NetHack, you will see messages such as:

  • You feel strong! You must have been exercising.
  • You feel agile! You must have been working on your reflexes.
  • You feel tough! You must be leading a healthy life-style.

These indicate an increase in strength, dexterity, and constitution respectively. Strength attributes come from exercise; NetHack will periodically check and adjust your stats, upward or downward.

For example, the pushing of boulders exercises your strength; some players become stronger as they play Sokoban because that involves pushing so many boulders.

You can increase your attributes up to their maximum values; for most humans this is 18/** in strength and 18 in the other attributes, though for other races this is different.

Other traits of the player

These are important, though you might choose to avoid calling them attributes.
