Cheating consists of actions which would make illegitmate your score.

There are valid forms of cheating such as explore mode, in which NetHack lets you revive a dead character, but also prevents your score from counting on the high-scores list.

Especially, try not to copy save files anywhere (save-scumming). Saving is for interrupting NetHack, not for having a saved game to reload after having died. If you want to play NetHack again after the death of your character, use explore mode or start a new game in a new random dungeon. Use of copied save files (save-scumming) makes illegitimate your high score when comparing against other players.

A death by trickery is a detection by NetHack of some form of cheating.
