The rules for wishing for artifacts in dNetHack differ from vanilla NetHack. Rather than counting the number of artifacts that already exist, the player gains the ability to wish for an artifact based on three events.

The player must still gain a wish in the normal means of doing so, such as with a magic lamp.

Each of the methods is distinct and can potentially be gained in any order. Each event allows the player to wish for one artifact.
