A food ration is the most basic comestible in NetHack. Many roles start out with a number of these. Samurai know them as gunyoki. They provide enough nutrition to fill you when you are hungry. They are also suitable for vegans.
Cursed food rations are always rotten when eaten. Uncursed food rations older than 30 turns and blessed food rations older than 50 turns have a 1/7 chance of being rotten when eaten.
Note that a lembas wafer provides the same nutrition as a food ration but is much lighter.
Food rations may be thrown at cats or dogs to tame them.
