A hole is a trap, but it is always visible. Holes do not hide. Holes, like most other traps, show as ^ on the map. Sometimes a monster or you intentionally jumps into a hole for escape.

You can zap a wand of digging downward to make a hole. You might see a monster do that. It can be annoying; whenever you find that dwarf, it drops down the hole again, and when you finally kill it, the wand is empty.

You could try to dig downward with a pick-axe, but that is very slow, and not useful for escaping monsters. First you would make a pit, and if you dig more it might become a hole. Zap or apply your wand or pick-axe, and press [>] to fire it downward.

Some dungeon levels are of hard materials which are impenetrable by these methods.
