* {{white|m}} represents a [[mimic]] (when it is not disguised as something else):

==Historical uses==
In Hack 1.21, based on [[Jay Fenlason's Hack]], [[minotaur]]s used the {{white|m}} glyph, while mega-worms used the {{white|M}} glyph; in Hack for PDP-11, the {{white|m}} glyph is given to the [[Small mimic|mimic]]. Both minotaurs and mimics retain their glyphs for their appearance in [[Hack 1.0]], and continue to use those glyphs up to [[NetHack 2.3e]].

In [[NetHack 3.0.0]], the [[mimic]] [[monster class]] is introduced and the three sizes of mimic are differentiated from each other, while the mummies are introduced and given the {{white|M}} glyph; the minotaur is moved to the [[giant humanoid]] monster class, {{white|H}}.

Relatively few variants add new monsters to the mimic monster class.
