In NetHack, the letter M serves the following purposes:

  • Press m, then a direction, to move your character without performing any other actions (such as attacking a monster or displacing a pet.
    • Even if autopickup is on, using m causes you not to pick up anything. It will also stop you from attacking I, and will even stop you feeling items on the floor if blind, such as a cockatrice or chickatrice corpse. Beware: you will always hit a warning symbol, and will also still attack a monster engulfing you.
  • Press m, to pick up items off the floor using a menu.
  • Press Shift + M, then a direction, to move your character as far as they can go in that direction. The character will not stop at items or corridor forks. See the article on movement for a comparison to other movement prefixes.

Historical uses

In Hack 1.21, based on Jay Fenlason's Hack, minotaurs used the m glyph, while mega-worms used the M glyph; in Hack for PDP-11, the m glyph is given to the mimic. Both minotaurs and mimics retain their glyphs for their appearance in Hack 1.0, and continue to use those glyphs up to NetHack 2.3e.

In NetHack 3.0.0, the mimic monster class is introduced and the three sizes of mimic are differentiated from each other, while the mummies are introduced and given the M glyph; the minotaur is moved to the giant humanoid monster class, H.
