In NetHack, the exclamation point (!) serves the following purposes:

• ! represents a potion, and is also used to draw the flash beam of an expensive camera.
• In a menu, press ! to select all potions.
• On Unix platforms, press ! to escape to a shell. Exit the shell to return to NetHack. This feature can be disabled, for example on public servers.
