In NetHack, the letter V serves the following purposes:

  • Press v to see the current game's version.
  • Press shift + v to see the game history.

Historical uses

In Hack 1.21, which is based on Jay Fenlason's hack, the viper uses the v glyph, while the vampire uses the V glyph. Hack for PDP-11 gives the v glyph to the violet fungi, while the vampire retains its initial glyph—both monsters are included in the initial bestiary for Hack 1.0, and retain the same glyphs from this version to NetHack 2.3e.

NetHack 3.0.0 establishes the vampire and fungus or mold monster classes, and moves the violet fungus to the latter group where it is given its current name and glyph.

Variants

In AceHack, UnNetHack, DynaHack, NetHack 4, NetHack Fourk, and FIQHack, the player can press v to autoexplore. In all of these variants except UnNetHack, they can also press shift + v to invoke or rub an item, break a wand, or ignite a potion of oil.
