An antimatter vortex:
|
An antimatter vortex, v, is a type of monster that appears in EvilHack and Hack'EM, and is adapted from NetHack brass and older versions of UnNetHack from 3.5.1 to 4.0.0. The antimatter vortex is unsolid and can be seen via infravision, and is the strongest type of vortex that can be encountered.
An antimatter vortex has an engulfing attack that disintegrates its target, and a passive attack that can disintegrate attacking monsters. Antimatter vortices possess shock resistance, fire resistance, cold resistance, sleep resistance, disintegration resistance, poison resistance, and stoning resistance.
Generation
Randomly generated anti-matter vortices are always created hostile, and are only generated in Gehennom.
Two antimatter vortices generate on the Plane of Air at level creation.
Antimatter vortices do not leave a corpse upon death.
Strategy
Antimatter vortices are highly dangerous monsters to encounter due to their high potential of instadeath and resistance to almost all forms of damage, possessing a base AC of 0 and a high 18 speed—they can even be created prematurely if a monster hits a polymorph trap. One of the few saving graces is that they are thankfully quite rare and will normally only generate in Gehennom, by which point a hero will ideally have found a source of disintegration resistance and a means of viable offense against them: the tin or corpse of a black dragon grants enough partial disintegration resistance for a hero to avoid instadeath, and the resistance can also be obtained from eating snarks and boojums.
Of note is that the antimatter vortex does not have acid resistance, meaning that stronger spellcasting heroes can potentially use the acid blast spell in order to douse them before they can draw close enough to pose a threat. For melee-focused heroes, the Sword of Annihilation grants extrinsic disintegration resistance that also protects their inventory as well. Heroes can also take advantage of the vortex's magic saving throw of 30, which is not as high compared to other incredibly-lethal monsters that they can encounter.
