In NetHack, the number eight (or 8) is not used to represent anything by default. However, it can still serve the following purposes:
- 8 and the other number keys can be used to specify a numeric prefix for a command or in a menu.
- If numpad movement is on, press 8 to move north.
- Some players also change the "monsters" option in the options file to utilize unused symbols like 8 for certain purposes, e.g. usually to represent ghosts in place of the blank space, or , and make them easier to see.
Historical uses
In NetHack 2.2a and NetHack 2.3e, Medusa used the 8 glyph.
